TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) -- Protesters continued their weeklong demonstrations as Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian defended himself against charges that he rigged last weekend's vote.
Chen -- re-elected by a scant 30,000 votes over Lien Chan, leader of Kuomintang (KMT) -- promised to support "a complete recount" of the ballots in the disputed contest.
"I am not afraid of a complete recount," Chen said. "This is my word -- that I will accept the results of the recount, whether it's in favor of me or not in favor of me. I hope Chairman Lien and [Lien's running mate, James Soong] will give their words that they will be willing to accept the recount." |
